Biochem/physiol Actions
Schisandrin B (SchB) is a major dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan from medicinal plant Schizandra Chinese that exhibit a wide variety of interesting biological activities, including hepatoprotective, antiviral, anticancer, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory. Schisandrin B induces apoptosis in number of human cancer cell lines. Schisandrin B protects against doxorubicin induced cardiomyopathy in mice. It also functions as a P-glycoprotein inhibitor, potentially boosting its therapeutic value by increasing drug absorption and counteracting cancer therapy resistance. Schisandrin B therapeutic actions involve arresting the cell cycle, triggering apoptosis through the enhancement of caspase-3 and Bcl-2 family proteins, and influencing key signaling pathways such as Wnt/β-catenin, PI3K/AKT, NF-κB, and p38 MAPK.
