General description
Survivin is also termed as BIRC5 (baculoviral inhibitor of apoptosis repeat-containing 5). It is a multifunctional protein. It belongs to the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family. BIRC5 is expressed in fetal tissues and several human malignancies like melanoma. Survivin is located on human chromosome 17q25.
Immunogen
The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human Survivin around the phosphorylation site of Thr34.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Survivin/BIRC5 (baculoviral inhibitor of apoptosis repeat-containing 5) plays a major role in ATL (adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma) cell viability. It can block apoptosis and induce the multiplication of cell. BIRC5 also plays a major role in the development of cancer.
