Biochem/physiol Actions

BOLA1 (BolA family member 1) is an aerobic, mitochondrial protein belonging to the BolA family. It consists of a specific helix-turn-helix motif. There are three types of secreted BOLA proteins present in human, BOLA1, BOLA2, and BOLA3. It mainly prevents the changes in mitochondrial morphology caused by glutathione (GSH) depletion through balancing mitochondrial thiol-redox potential. It has also been reported that BOLA1 may also play an important role in the cell proliferation and cell-cycle regulation.
